Foraging for Mystery Berries and Other Found Foods
More interesting things I found while hiking through an area I don't normally visit. It was getting dark, but it looked like there was a lot more promising vegetation to explore another day. I did spot some beach plums! |
| Mystery Berry #1 The berries below come in beautiful hues running the gamut from light grey, robin's egg blue, indigo, deep purple and burgundy. Growing on a shrub, they have red stems and leave that resemble grape leaves. Click images to enlarge |

| Mystery Berry #2 - This one grows on a fairly tall shrub. My best guess is that it is common elder - Sambucus nigra - but always best to check with those who know for sure |

|
| Mystery Berry #3 - This one grows on a mid-size shrub. Looks like Rowan - Mountain Ash - Sorbus aucuparia to me. |
 |
| Mystery Green - This one is growing all over the place. My neighbor, who is from Greece says they eat it all the time but she doesn't recall the English name for it. |
 |
| Mystery Plant - Sorry for the blurry image. It was windy and I took this with my cell phone. Looks like dried pods of some sort. Anything good to eat?

Mystery Solved -
Bittersweet - Solanum dulcamara
TOXIC
When I first saw this I thought the berries were actually growing on a tree. On closer inspection, it is a vine that is almost completely covering the tree.
The berries are covered with a bright yellow papery shell. You can see one that is about to burst out of it. There is a distinctive cross mark on the bottom.
